WHAT IS SPEECH AND DEBATE?
Speech and Debate is an extracurricular activity that is challenging and competitive. Similar to athletic activities, speech and debate requires regular practice, coaching, hard work, and competitions. In simple terms, it's competitive speaking in the form of acting, public speaking, or debate.
HOW DOES IT WORK AT EAST?
At East, students can take classes (Basic Speech, Competitive Speech, and Debate), and they can also attend weekly practices. Students do not have to be in a class to compete, and not all students in classes end up choosing to compete. We work with any student to help discover what they want to do!
WHY IS SPEECH AND DEBATE VALUABLE?
Increases academic performance (provides unique benefits for gifted and at-risk populations)
Plays an extremely important role in college admissions as well as scholarships opportunities
Provides a supportive space for students to find self-worth, confidence, friends, and much more!
